Ihr Arzt oder Ihre Ärztin hat Ihnen Alocapil verschrieben, weil Sie an anlagebedingtem Haarverlust leiden (dieser wird auch androgenetische Alopezie genannt).
Alocapil blockiert ein wichtiges Enzym (Typ II 5-Alpha-Reduktase), welches an der Regulation des Haarwachstums beteiligt ist. Dadurch senkt Alocapil in der Kopfhaut spezifisch den Spiegel von Dihydrotestosteron (DHT), welches einen Hauptgrund für den anlagebedingten Haarverlust darstellt. Dadurch verhindert Alocapil weiteren Haarverlust, kann zu verstärktem Haarwachstum führen und den Prozess der Glatzenbildung rückgängig machen. Männer mit leichtem bis mittelschwerem, aber nicht vollständigem Haarverlust können erwarten, von der Anwendung von Alocapil zu profitieren.
In einer Untersuchung bei Frauen war Alocapil in der Behandlung des anlagebedingten Haarverlustes nicht wirksam.
Alocapil ist ausschliesslich für die Anwendung beim Mann gedacht und darf von Frauen oder Kindern nicht angewendet werden.
Der anlagebedingte Haarverlust beim Mann zeichnet sich durch zunehmende Verminderung der Kopfhaare aus, mit schwindender Haarlinie, Geheimratseckenbildung und Ausbildung einer Scheitel- oder Wirbelglatze. Dihydrotestosteron (DHT) trägt zur Verkürzung der Wachstumsphase und dadurch zur Ausdünnung des Haares bei. Dieser Prozess führt zu anlagebedingtem Haarverlust, welcher bei Betroffenen im Allgemeinen um das 20. Lebensjahr beginnt und mit dem Alter zunehmend sichtbar wird. Wenn ein Haarverlust bereits längere Zeit besteht, so wird in diesem Bereich das Haar wahrscheinlich nicht mehr nachwachsen können.
Alocapil darf von Frauen und Kindern nicht eingenommen werden.
Frauen, welche schwanger sind oder schwanger sein könnten, dürfen Alocapil nicht einnehmen (siehe auch unter «Darf Alocapil während einer Schwangerschaft oder in der Stillzeit eingenommen werden?»).

Diese Anzeichen weisen möglicherweise auf eine ernsthafte Erkrankung wie Brustkrebs hin. Alocapil zeigt üblicherweise keine Wechselwirkungen mit anderen Arzneimitteln. Dennoch sollten Sie Ihren Arzt oder Ihre Ärztin immer über alle Arzneimittel informieren, die Sie einnehmen oder einzunehmen gedenken, auch über solche, die Sie ohne Rezept erhalten haben.

Falls der Wirkstoff von Alocapil durch den Mund oder durch die Haut einer Frau aufgenommen wird, welche mit einem Jungen schwanger ist, könnte dies theoretisch dazu führen, dass der Junge mit Missbildungen an den Geschlechtsorganen geboren wird. Ganze Tabletten sind mit einem Schutzfilm versehen, welcher bei normalem Gebrauch den Kontakt mit der aktiven Substanz verhindert. Nehmen Sie jeden Tag eine Tablette Alocapil mit oder ohne Mahlzeit ein. Folgen Sie den Anweisungen Ihres Arztes oder Ihrer Ärztin.
Alocapil wirkt nicht schneller oder besser, wenn Sie mehr als eine Tablette pro Tag einnehmen. Sie sollten jeden Tag nur eine Tablette Alocapil einnehmen.
Es ist wichtig, dass Sie Alocapil so lange einnehmen, wie es Ihr Arzt oder Ihre Ärztin verschrieben hat. Im Allgemeinen ist eine tägliche Anwendung über mindestens drei Monate nötig, bevor Sie ein Stoppen des Haarverlusts oder eine Zunahme des Haarwachstums feststellen. Alocapil kann seine Wirkung nur entfalten, wenn es über einen längeren Zeitraum und ohne Unterbrechung eingenommen wird.
Um eine bestmögliche Wirkung zu erhalten, wird eine andauernde Therapie empfohlen.

Nehmen Sie Alocapil so ein, wie es Ihnen Ihr Arzt oder Ihre Ärztin verschrieben hat. Sollten Sie dennoch eine Tablette vergessen haben, so nehmen Sie keine zusätzliche ein. Nehmen Sie einfach die nächste Tablette wie gewöhnlich ein.
Ändern Sie nicht von sich aus die verschriebene Dosierung. Wenn Sie glauben, das Arzneimittel wirke zu schwach oder zu stark, so sprechen Sie mit Ihrem Arzt oder Apotheker bzw. mit Ihrer Ärztin oder Apothekerin.
Folgende Nebenwirkungen können bei der Einnahme von Alocapil auftreten: Gelegentlich haben Männer verminderte Lust auf Geschlechtsverkehr oder Schwierigkeiten bei der Erektion. Eine kleinere Anzahl von Männern kann eine Abnahme des Ejakulatvolumens bemerken (dies scheint jedoch der normalen Geschlechtsfunktion nicht entgegenzuwirken). Diese unerwünschten Wirkungen bilden sich sowohl bei Männern, welche die Einnahme von Alocapil unterbrechen, als auch bei vielen Männern, welche die Behandlung weiter fortsetzen, zurück.
